In a world overflowing with noise, the most impactful voices are often the ones that speak with intention. The message above is a reminder that our words are more than sounds — they are instruments that shape connection, clarity, and consequence. “I think before I speak” calls us back to mindfulness. It challenges us to pause long enough to understand not only what we’re saying, but why we’re saying it. Thoughtful communication isn’t about hesitation — it’s about purpose. “I speak the heart of it” encourages honesty without excess. When we strip away pretense and get to the essence of what matters, our words land with authenticity. People don’t remember rambling; they remember truth delivered simply and directly. “Anything you can name you can limit” reminds us that labels create boundaries. When we define something too quickly, we shrink its possibilities. This line invites us to speak with awareness, knowing that naming can empower — but also confine. And finally: “How will what I say affect someone in the next five minutes?” It’s a question that brings everything into focus. Our words have immediate impact. They can lift or wound, open or close, connect or divide. When we hold this question before speaking, we shift from reaction to responsibility. This short passage is more than advice — it’s a communication philosophy. A practice. A discipline. A reminder that every conversation is a chance to shape the world around us with clarity, compassion, and care. PURPOSE, PROCESS, PAYOFF A ND SUCCESS! *

According to David, “Your joy is part of your very fiber and so is your resilience. Recounting joy reminds you of your spirit, which is a vital part of who you really are. As you remember your joyful moments, plaster a ‘joy wall’ with them. Watch and notice the feelings that come to you as they add up. Hope and confidence will grow.” What’s the bottom line? One-way mental resilience empowers life is to be able to recover and adapt faster. To paraphrase Darwin, it’s not the strongest or fastest who survive, it’s those who c an adapt. PTSD has been just one of many problems, and that, along with other issues, has taken so many from our ranks. Now retired, my wife and I devote much of our time to voluntary services. The partnership between the Marine Corps’s Toys for Tots and the Pierce County Crime Stoppers program, which, together in 2015, served more than 18,000 children in Pierce County alone, has been a natural fit. Every Christmas, we contract with the Washington State Department of Corrections for female inmates who assist at the Toys for Tots warehouse in distributing donated toys to deserving children. The ladies who come to us have not only had many diverse problems in their past, they must deal daily with stressful events and incidents inside the facility. Through a narrated discussion with David Sweet, and utilizing his book, Heart of Resilience , we were all able to learn how to deal better with problems in our past and the situations we deal with now. I’m sure the time we spent with David will continue to serve and improve our lives by enabling us to accept the past and better deal with the present to ensure a more successful future. Here are testimonials mentioning personal impacts, inspiration, introspection, and sincere thank you’s in regard to David as a person and his writings, including his first book Stones Winds and Life. Bob Fassl Paintings and drawings Dear David; I wanted to let you know that your collection of poems and stories, "Stones, Winds and Life," moved my wife and I. From one page to the next, your thoughts gave a voice to an overall way-of-life which we’ve held so dear: optimism, and the identification of the "silver linings" within everything, however seemingly negative. Trying to cope within the framework that is our modern, technological society all-the-while retaining focus upon the aspects of life that are truly important; feeding our souls as much as we fulfill our other hungers; realizing the futility and self-defeating nature of striving for the material . . . it was heart warming to hear these lessons of living put so simply and eloquently. You have reminded us of how truly important it is to retain that "child within the parent it came" and embrace the virtues of innocence and wonder. Growing- up and growing describe two very different things to me . . . I’ve always preferred to grow, just not necessarily "up." Thanks again for reminding us to look beyond "society’s mold!" Warmest Regards; Bob Fassl BobFassl.com Cordell H. Bahn, M.D. Re: "Stones, Winds and Life" by David Sweet From dark corners of death, steel and despair, in the No Man’s Land of "Generals and Pawns" to the joyful sneezes-yes, sneezes- of "Missiles," David Sweet’s beautiful collection is about love and the places I’ve never thought to look for it. "Clues" and "Welcome Back To Ego World!" just won’t leave me alone! Cordell Bahn Tacoma, WA David Sweet’s book, "Stone, Winds and Life," is a unique, thought-provoking collection of work. The variety of writings and topics makes you curious to find what is on the next turning of the page. The following are a few selections that particularly stood out to me: In "Last Call," I like how David chooses of a very routine act of nature, such as falling of the leaves in autumn, and explores it, finding a way to meaningfully apply it to your life. "Clues" is a proverbial poem that explores man’s soul, nature, and the idea of seeking truth. It left me with a smile on my face. "Fortunes" also lends itself to a proverbial style. I enjoy the pictures David paints as he encourages us through this poem, to take one day at a time . . . that life’s riches and fortunes are not necessarily those things that are tangible. Tom Nemec, owner Tom's West Side Automotive, Tacoma. WA Dear David -- Opening your book after having not read it for sometime, I was pleased to find its power and wisdom still very captivating. My favorite poems, just to name a few, are "Thought Forms," "Life is on Time," "Dirty Feast," "In the Moment," "Masks," and "Let the Children Be." There is an energy that is present through out the book, however, those poems speak of truth and life. They are about the lessons I strive to learn and keep close at heart daily. It has always seemed important to listen in life for those little "nuggets" of wisdom -- in fact, I often search for them. I am more than impressed to find the source of such nuggets to be within arms distance. Thank you for sharing your heart and mind with us.
